P1103 (Mass Airflow Sensor in Range But Higher Than Expected)

  1. Remove 4 screws holding the air filter cover and 2 screws holding the MAF sensor to the lower part of the airfilter.  These are all hex heads, but there are 2 sizes. I didn't note which was which.
Remove screws holding the air filter
  2. Remove the air filter - I also vacuum cleaned this, not sure it made ANY difference

  3. The 88k mile engine has  some oil in the air intake, this is where the MAF sensor lives
Remove screws holding the air filter
  4. Remove 2 T20 screws that told the MAF sensor in place

  5. I cleaned the MAF sensor with methylated spirits.  Probably NOT a good thing.  Apparetly it should be isopropyl alchohol or special sensor clearer - I had nether.

Re-assemble

I few weeks ago under fairly "stern" driving the CEL in my Volvo 1.6d DRIVEe came on.

Scanning codes indicated a permanent P1103.

I cleared the code a number of times and saw it come back first temporarily, but at around 30-50 miles after it was last cleared it would return as a permanent code.

I decided to have a go at cleaning the MAF sensor, or failling that replace it.

Herewith my experience.

It's now been 150 miles over 3 trips (and 5 days days since I cleaned the sensor) and the code has not re-appeared.

It seems that (at least in my case) cleaning the sensor solved the problem.
